Some trial plantings were made throughout Central Otago in the 1950's-1970's by private individuals, the Department of Agriculture and Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), But it was the 1980's before trial commercial plantings would be made - the "new pioneers" included Alan Brady at Gibbston Valley Wines (Queenstown), Rolf and Lois Mills at Rippon Vineyard (Wanaka), the Grant family at William Hill (Alexandra) and Sue Edwards and Verdun Burgess at Conroy's Road, near Alexandra. Established in 1981, Black Ridge is one of the pioneering vineyards in Central Otago. The steep rocky terrain only allows for pockets of grapes to be planted around the hillside. William Hill lies on the western outskirts of Alexandra where the sun soaked, sandy location and the dry summers combine to produce quality fruit. Their first commercial production was in 1987; much of the wine is now exported. With a vista that stretches down the symmetrical rows and across the clear waters of Lake Wanaka, it is easy to see why Rippon Vineyard is one of the world's most beautiful vineyards. Gibbston Valley's first grapes were also planted in 1981. Today Gibbston Valley is firmly established as one of New Zealand's leading Pinot Noir producers continually winning gold medals and trophies for its pinots both in New Zealand and overseas. Gibbston Valley Wines has also purchased land in other subregions of Central Otago. Related LinksHistory an Introduction Feraud Bragato History Today
