It's midwinter here in Central Otago, there's snow on the mountains, what could be better? (A Pacific island, perhaps?)
Congratulations to all those who moved on our Wild Earth Pinot Noir offering last month - it sold out very quickly following all of the international accolades for this wine. We have saved the last few bottles for our Serious Cellar Selection - which also has some other hard-to-get premium labels from Central Otago (including Felton Road) and throughout New Zealand. Our newsletter subscribers get first option, but be in quick!
And for those wanting some top wines in a lower price bracket, see our deal on Roaring Meg Pinot Noir 2007, which just won a gold medal at the London International Wine Challenge.

NEW LISTING: COAL PIT

Coal PitCoal Pit Vineyard on Coal Pit Road is in the heart of the Gibbston Valley grape growing district.
Coal Pit takes it's name from a nearby historical site which was a familiar landmark for musterers, gold miners and pioneers who, as they passed over the coal pit saddle, sourced coal from the pit. The coal was bagged at the pit, loaded onto drays and brought down Coal Pit road to the valley.
A new winery was operational for the 2008 Vintage. The 12-hectare site yielded 22.5 tonnes of Piinot Noir and 15 tonnes of Sauvignon Blanc this year. A cellar door facility is planned for opening in summer 2008.

VINEYARD DEVELOPMENTS PLANNED
The Central Otago District Council has heard a resource consent application for a new 18ha vineyard complex at Queensberry near Wanaka. If it goes ahead, the complex will include wine production, wine tasting, a restaurant, boutique accommodation with up to 40 beds, offices, conference facilities, spa and separate viticulture building. The council's decision should be announced soon.
Meanwhile plans for a large-scale integrated viticulture development incorporating residential housing and a winery near Tarras have been put on hold for three months.
The Lindis Valley Wines' application for development on 228ha of land on the corner of Maori Point Rd and State Highway 8 and subdivision of the land into 28 rural lots, was to be heard by the Central Otago District Council recently, however the council's planning report recommended it be declined. The company had based its proposal on a template similar to Peregrine wines in the Gibbston Valley, and the new McArthur Ridge development at Springvale.
This is the second proposal for a viticulture project near Tarras. A $10 million winery able to operate 24-hours a day got consent in 2006, but building has not yet begun.
