NORTHBURN WINE TOURISM WINNER

Northburn Station, near Cromwell, was judged Best Innovative Wine Tourism Experience in the Best of Wine Tourism Awards for Great Wine Capitals Global Network for the Christchurch-South Island wine region. The award was for the wine and food match. "It is what we have been working for from the start," says co-owner Jan Pinkney. "It shows that what we set out to do has achieved fabulous results for us. NEW LISTING - GEORGETOWN

GeorgeTown vineyard is planted with a Burgundian style trellis. The close planting (3 times as many vines/Ha as the norm) encourages deeper rooting and more structured wine. The lower trellis (half that of the norm) leads to more intense flavours. Very low crop levels per vine leads to ripe balanced fruit.
The grapes are grown on a snippet of land at the Cromwell end of the Kawarau Gorge. It is a warm, sheltered site with alluvial soil located directly above the Kawarau River and below the Pisa and Carrick Ranges
Ian Dee (B. Agr. Sc.) has 12 years viticulture experience in Central Otago. Now living on the vineyard Ian is able to closely monitor the vines. When ripe the grapes are sent to Duncan Forsyth Mount Edward. It had a warm ferment using native yeasts. Then aged and fermented again in French oak barrels for 11 months. The wine has not been fined or filtered which helps retain the flavours emanating from the site.
