CROMWELL BASIN

The Cromwell Basin has grown over recent years to become the centre of the Central Otago wine industry - it is the location of most of the major winery facilities, freighting companies, wine bottling and storage facilities. Otagowine.com is based right here in the middle of it. Only a decade ago, the oldest vines in this part of Central Otago were not even producing; now the Cromwell Basin is by far Central Otago’s most important sub-region, with over two-thirds of the region’s plantings.

Historically, Cromwell was known as The Junction: the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers flowed together here. Now the meeting of the waters is less well defined as the two mighty rivers are slowed by the flooding of the man-made Lake Dunstan - a prime recreational asset on the doorstep of Cromwell. All around the lake in the Cromwell Basin vineyards now flourish on warm sweeping slopes from Bannockburn in the south to Lowburn, Mount Pisa and Bendigo, as well as further up the Clutha River, near Tarras and Luggate.
