CENTRAL OTAGO WINE GROWERS ASSOCIATION

PROMOTION

The Central Otago Winegrowers Promotion Committee is for fostering a collective and cooperative approach to the promotion of all Central Otago wines through:

  • strategic marketing and branding
  • providing general information on the Central Otago wine industry
  • fingerboard road signs
  • wine tastings for trade and public
  • coordination of promotional efforts

COWA now has a new logo, recognising the move of the association from grape growers to winegrowers - the former bunch of grapes now has a glass added. Central Otago Pinot Celebrations held in 2000 and 2002 have brought national and international media, wine-lovers and trade people producing significant spin-offs for the region and wineries. For further information, see http://www.otagowine.co.nz/pinotcelebration

INFORMATION

Quality generic information material on Central Otago and the wine industry is provided through

  • maps
  • brochures
  • promotional display material
  • wine writers

The association produces tear-off maps to promote the wine trail, as well as a new fold-out colour-coded wine trail map embracing the whole district. A 2000 Pinot Noir poster was produced marking the turn of the century. A resource of information for visiting wine writers is available.

COORDINATION

COWA believes the Central Otago wine industry needs to work together to brand and promote its wines. "We produce quality wines with international recognition, our terroir is unique, and we are a cohesive industry with a common goal."

EDUCATION

The association organises meetings and workshops during the year on topics including

  • integrated wine/grape production
  • pruning
  • pests and diseases
  • safety
  • vine nutrition
  • etc.

COWA also has representation on the polytechnic education advisory committee, and has regular liaison with the Cromwell campus of the Otago Polytechnic.

KEEPING OTAGO PHYLLOXERA FREE

COWA has an industry document called Phylloxera Prevention Protocols which is free to all vineyards, wineries and industry people.
The aims are:

  • Keeping phylloxera at bay
  • Enhancing protective behaviours and practices
  • Maintaining Central Otago as a phylloxera-free region

Colourful information sheets are available to wine sale outlets - these are to inform the public what phylloxera is and emphasise the improtance of dipping all grape material.

In addition, phylloxera signs have been made. They show the phylloxera bug with a slash through it and stating:
"This is a phylloxera free area.
Please help keep it that way.
Do not enter vineyards with soil or mud on your shoes.
Phylloxera is a killer we don't need, thankyou."

For more information about phylloxera go to http://www.otagowine.com/phylloxera

HAVING FUN

COWA organises two main social events each year for members to mix and mingle. These are the Christmas BBQ and the highly popular mid-winter Feraud Dinner.
