Central Otago Riesling

MOUNT EDWARD
Riesling 2008 $22.95
Qty:
This Riesling is grown at our Lowburn vineyards where the soils here are a mixture of glacial and river based gravelly schist soils.
Harvested in April at a low 6 tonne per hectare, this Riesling is off dry in style. Floral and citrus aromas are followed by flavours of lemons, limes and stonefruits, all underpinned by mineral notes by refreshing acidity.
This wine is drinking extremely well now but can be cellared with confidence.
Auburn
Lowburn Riesling 2009 NZ$29.95
Qty:
Sourced from 16yo vines in the subregion of Lowburn. Clean fruit, no botrytis, gently whole-bunch pressed. Lightly settled in tank, racked off solids and fermented cool. Bottled October 2009. Alcohol 9.0%, pH 3.03, TA 8.2g/L, RS 31g/L. Production 760 bottles. Floral and fruit-driven, particularly apricot/peach and lemon/lime. The palate echoes the nose, with a taut, youthful backbone of acidity that complements the residual sweetness. Finely textured, the structure leads to a long, precise finish. It will take six months in bottle before this wine truly integrates and from then, enjoy and cellar at your leisure.
Auburn
Twilight Riesling 2009 NZ$29.95
(limit 6 bottles) Qty:
Sourced from 16yo vines in the subregion of Lowburn. Combination of clean and botrytis fruit, gently whole-bunch pressed and returned to press to soak overnight. Lightly settled in tank, racked off solids and fermented very cool. Bottled October 2009. Alcohol 10.0%, pH 3.21, TA 7.7g/L, RS 28g/L. Production 242 bottles. Aromatic and lifted, there is a combination of stonefruit and citrus on the nose, leading to exotic spice notes. Lots of viscosity and honey notes, finishing surprisingly dry. This is an interesting wine, an example of a spatlese trocken (fruit harvested sweet, made dry) that we initially planned as a dessert wine, but the microbes had other ideas. This is not a stereotypical Riesling and a wine that we will only make in certain years. Best enjoyed as an aperitif or even with roast pork.

VALLI
Old Vine Riesling 2009 $27.95
Qty:
This wine has been produced from some of the South Islands oldest grape vines, (planted near Alexandra in 1981).
Of all New Zealand's grape growing regions Alexandra has the greatest diurnal temperature range, perfect for Riesling, the hot days mean the fruit fully ripens while the cool nights help retain its acidity. The Valli Old Vine Riesling style is consistent with previous vintages, aromatically very perfumed; white peach and ripe stone fruits, with a hint of clean dusty crushed rock, (the minerality associated with this variety).
It is a dry Riesling, with the acidly being balanced by a core of concentrated ripe fruit and depth of flavour only old vines and low cropping levels can achieve.
As only one hectare of these old vines exists, production is very limited with less than 400 cases made annually. The philosophy behind the Riesling is the same as for all Valli wines; show a sense of place, work well with food and have the ability to age and improve over time, we expect it to be alive and well in 10 years so well worth cellaring and watching evolve.
Mondillo
Riesling 2009 NZ$24.95
Qty:
Limited Release - Dry & citrusy, with hint of honey...
"Showing excellent intensity, this is a medium-bodied Bendigo wine with citrusy, slightly limey flavours, slightly sweet and youthful. Tightly structured, with a firm acid spine, a hint of honey, and a long, tight finish." Four Stars, Winestate Magazine July/August 2010 Edition Michael Cooper Review
MT DIFFICULTY
TARGET GULLY RIESLING 2008 $27.95
Qty:
Floral and ripe stonefruit notes compete in the aroma of this Riesling. On the palate these flavours dance in harmony. Residual sugar (35gL-1) has been retained to balance the high natural acidity. This residual sugar has also fleshed out the mid palate of the wine. This wine will richly reward those who can cellar it.
DESERT HEART

GIBBSTON VALLEY
Le Fou Riesling 2007 $35.00
Qty:
Youthful colour with straw coloured rim. The bouquet is bright and fragrant, extraordinarily aromatic. Clear aromas of lime, sherbet and blossom emerge, bright and strongly varietal. The palate has a sweet succulence of flavour, with blossom and limey flavours again prevailing. A lovely citrus cut is provided by the acidity that pierces the palate keeping it fresh and exuberant. A mineral, nervy energy counterpoints the cool climate Riesling fruit. With its tantalising balance between sweetness and zesty tangy flavours combined with obvious youthfulness, Le Fou has definite long term cellaring potential (10 years).

FELTON ROAD
Riesling Block 1 2009 $38.95 (limited)
sorry, sold out. Qty:
The bouquet has an arresting interplay of apricots and florals with a complexing hint of 'background noise'. This year the three Rieslings are closer in profile, with the distinction being on the body and plushness of the wine. The Block 1 displays rich stonefruits but with an extra harmonic of complexity and structure.

RIPPON VINEYARD
Riesling 2007 $30.95

PEREGRINE Charcoal Creek Late Harvest Riesling 2009 $31.95
Qty:
The 2009 Peregrine Charcoal Creek Riesling made in a late harvest style comes from John and Barbara Hosie's Charcoal Creek vineyard in the Lowburn Valley just north of Cromwell. This Riesling was left on the vines well past the traditional end of harvest. Whilst not producing huge amounts of sugar some wonderful flavours developed through the combination of hang time and the influence of 20% botrytis infection at the time of harvest. Harvest was conducted manually and crushed into our press for skin contact of approximately fourteen hours. The fruit was pressed to tank for cold settling prior to cool fermentation. The resulting wine is not an over the top cloying sticky monster but a melting pot of honey, apricot, pink grapefruit marmalade beautifully presented by its elegant structure. Charcoal Creek Riesling is a delicate sweet wine that has a perfect combination of flavour complexity, fruit sweetness and superbly balanced acidity.

Fruit from the Parkburn (Cromwell Basin) vineyard is used to make this classically styled off-dry Riesling. Nectarines and mandarins dominate the intensely fruity nose of this wine in its youth, and the palate is filled with the same concentration of citrus fruits with further hints of pineapple and peaches. The excellent balance of this wine is brought to completion by a long and cleansing finish. Best enjoyed with long lunches in the sunshine and delicate seafood dishes, this wine will continue to evolve over the next decade.
