Peregrine - Saddleback "Wines with Altitude"

Peregrine The essence of Central Otago, the world's most southern wine region, is symbolised by the peregrine, a spectacular falcon which thrives amongst the rugged mountains, lakes and rivers. The grapevines grow in alluvial schist soils on carefully chosen sites. They produce elegant, pure, cool climate wines which are a true expression of their environment.

Peregrine swept to fame by winning the Sauvignon Blanc trophy at the Air New Zealand wine awards with its first ever vintage in 1998. The only other two wines released at the time also won bronze medals - Riesling and Gewurztraminer, giving a boost to the vineyard which is set to be one of Central Otago's largest.Peregrine Wines is a collaboration between Greg Hay, viticulturist, Steve Smith, Master of Wine, and formerly viticulturalist with Villa Maria, and Adam Peren´s Wentworth Estate, and is based at Wentworth Estate, Gibbston, near Queenstown. Wentworth Estate is a sixty hectare Champagne-style wine and lifestyle development.

The 2009 Peregrine Charcoal Creek Riesling made in a late harvest style comes from John and Barbara Hosie’s Charcoal Creek vineyard in the Lowburn Valley just north of Cromwell. This Riesling was left on the vines well past the traditional end of harvest. Whilst not producing huge amounts of sugar some wonderful flavours developed through the combination of hang time and the influence of 20% botrytis infection at the time of harvest. Harvest was conducted manually and crushed into our press for skin contact of approximately fourteen hours. The fruit was pressed to tank for cold settling prior to cool fermentation. The resulting wine is not an over the top cloying sticky monster but a melting pot of honey, apricot, pink grapefruit marmalade beautifully presented by its elegant structure. Charcoal Creek Riesling is a delicate sweet wine that has a perfect combination of flavour complexity, fruit sweetness and superbly balanced acidity.
