Lowburn Ferry
Lowburn Ferry is a family owned and managed vineyard dedicated to the production of high quality Pinot Noir wine. It was established in 2000, nestled on a sheltered north facing terrace in the Lowburn Valley beneath the Pisa Range in Central Otago.
Lowburn Ferry owners Roger and Jean Gibson enjoy a hands-on approach to managing the vineyard which is both practical and scientific. Roger is specialist in soils and plant science (Master of Applied Science, first class honours) and has worked in research and education; Jean holds a degree in Horticultural Science from Massey University. They work with highly acclaimed winemaker Carol Bunn to produce the very best wines from their unique vineyard site. Lowburn Ferry wines have won consistent accolades including champion wine of the show at NZ Bragato Wine Awards with their very first vintage. Currently 4ha are planted in Pinot Noir grapes, a mix of clones 5, 115, 667, 777 and Abel, mostly on grafted rootstock.
Lowburn Ferry Vineyard is established on terraces that had been in pasture for more than 100 years. This had allowed organic matter to build up in the soils, complementing the natural supply of nutrients derived from schist parent material. The resulting healthy soils have excellent biological activity which enhances the terroir of the site. The vines are hand tended to maximise the benefits of this unique terroir and microclimate. The company has a philosophy of environmental sustainability, and the vineyard management focuses on soil health through monitoring of soil moisture, chemical, physical and biological properties.
In the early settlement days of Central Otago, Lowburn was a prominent ferry landing for travellers moving between the goldmining reefs of Bendigo, and the township of Cromwell. A stone hotel was built at Lowburn Ferry in 1869, and about 1873 a ferry or punt began operating, and the crossing, with its tree-lined approaches and picturesque setting, became not only an important link between Cromwell and the lakes at Wanaka and Queenstown, but also a popular tourist excursion.

"There's a wonderfully uninhibited quality to this Pinot from winemaker Carol Bunn. It's dark, sweet and spicy and fair romps across the palate, fresh but visceral. Oak lends support without compromising the juicy core of fruit. Food suggestion: barbecued Toulouse sausages." 4 stars - Cuisine Pinot Noir tasting - November 2009
Lowburn Ferry Pinot Noir 2007 $40.95
Lowburn Ferry Pinot Noir 2007 shows dark fruit and cherry notes on the nose that are gently wrapped in a blanket of dried herbs and spices with velvety tannins in the mouth. This classic Central Otago Pinot Noir is long and smooth in the finish and makes an ideal match food especially with roasted duck and other poultry. It will continue to develop depth and complexity for 5-7 years.
Gold medal, NZ International Wine Show 2008 Judges' note: A powerful wine with a rich earthy depth, fruits of the forest, wild thyme, savoury oak and a concentrated finish.
