WOOING TREE
Pinot Noir 2006 MAGNUM $120.00
Only 100 produced, individually numbered and in a wooden display case. This Pinot Noir is the flagship wine from the family owned and run, single vineyard site and is a great follow on from the multi award winning 2005.
Ripe hand picked fruit, gentle winemaking and maturation in French oak have resulted in a complex and powerful wine, with aromas of ripe cherries, raspberries and Black Doris plums, a rich and silky smooth palate with fine grainy tannins to match the fruit. Excellent value, drinking fantastically well now and will develop and cellar for several years.
QUARTZ REEF
Bendigo Estate Pinot Noir 2006 MAGNUM $159.95 Single vineyard bottling of Pinot noir from the Quartz Reef vineyard at Bendigo, Magnums individually numbered from 1 to 650 - 1500ml This is the sixth release from our Bendigo Estate Vineyard – a 15 hectare north sloping ideal site planted on grafted pinot noir vines of various clones and rootstocks in the heart of Central Otago. The fruit was hand picked in ideal conditions on the 28th March. The winemaking was very much in keeping with the traditional practices from the old world. The wine is a dense red in colour; the complex nose has hints of dark berry fruits, nutmeg, and hay. A textural wine displaying a compact core of fruit that is encased by ripe grainy tannins. A focused and balanced wine with interest. Cellar 6 – 10 years.
The New Zealand
Wine-lover's CompanionNZ$29.99
An A-to-Z guide for the casual drinker - by KARL DU FRESNE
The New Zealand Wine-lover's Companion is the perfect book for anyone who's
enthusiastic about wine but intimidated by the esoteric language that often
surrounds it. Assuming no prior knowledge, it takes every puzzling reference
that a casual wine drinker might encounter in wine articles and reviews, in
wine shops or wineries, on labels or in conversation and explains it in simple,
but not condescending, language. From grape varieties and winemaking techniques
to the terminology used to articulate the subtle attributes of wines, this
handy primer will demystify the language of wine and enhance the experience
of wine-drinking.
Although written for a New Zealand audience, it is international in scope, covering other wine countries and their significant wine styles. Entertaining as well as informative, it includes offbeat anecdotes such as the entry for Bond, James, which explains why he switched from Taittinger to Bollinger. The New Zealand Wine-lover's Companion is a compact reference, a good read and an ideal gift. Karl du Fresne has been a wine columnist for New Zealand House & Garden, Wellington's Evening Post and the Sunday Star-Times colour magazine. He has also written on wine for Cuisine, the Dominion Post and National Business Review. At one time editor of the Dominion, Karl du Fresne now works as a freelance journalist from his home in the Wairarapa. Price: NZ$29.99
The Landscape of New Zealand WineNZ$79.99
by Kevin Judd and Bob Campbell
Kevin Judd occupies a unique position in the New Zealand wine industry. Not
only is he one of our most respected winemakers, having turned Cloudy Bay
Vineyards into the international star that it is, but he is, without doubt, New
Zealand's finest wine photographer. This potent blend of wine knowledge and
artistic skill is the foundation that underpins his spectacular new book of wine
photography, The Landscape of New Zealand Wine.
In this book, Kevin Judd collects together the best of his vineyard photography from all of New Zealand's wine regions to present a significant visual record of the beauty, diversity and breadth of one of the New World wine industry's great success stories. Covering Auckland, Waiheke, Northland, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and the Wairarapa in the North Island, and Marlborough, Nelson, Canterbury and Central Otago in the South Island, the character and terroir of each region are elegantly and evocatively revealed in Kevin Judd's remarkable photography. Each wine region also has an introduction written by both Kevin Judd and Bob Campbell, one of New Zealand's top wine critics and writers. This is a strikingly beautiful book, featuring the finest quality photography of a subject matter that has huge appeal for both New Zealanders and visitors alike. Kevin Judd was the chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay Vineyards from 1985 until 2009 and was responsible for the development of the company's range of premium wines, including the renowned Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc. In 2009 he left Cloudy Bay to establish his own label, Greywacke. He has been seriously involved in wine photography for 20 years, and has had his work published in numerous publications throughout the world. Price: NZ$79.99
Michael Cooper's Wine Atlas of New ZealandNZ$125
The Wine Atlas of New Zealand combines one of our most talented photographers with one of our premier wine
writers to produce what is both a beautiful coffee table book and a great source of reading/reference for anyone
with even a passing interest in the New Zealand wine industry.
Michael Cooper, one of New
Zealand's premier wine writers,
combines his knowledge of
the wine industry with a
lively writing style to capture
the spirit of individual winemakers
and their wineries
in this stunning atlas. This is
the only Wine Atlas devoted
entirely to New Zealand wines
and wine-making.
Although this is the second edition of the Wine Atlas of New Zealand there is little similarity to the original edition, such has been the change in the New Zealand wine industry over recent years. Since the first edition was published in 2002 the number of wine-producing companies has increased by nearly 200 and New Zealand's total area of bearing vineyards has doubled. This edition also sees the introduction of some amazing new maps. Each region is firstly represented by a 3D map which gives you the feel of the area and shows the topography surrounding it. Then each subregion is mapped so clearly you could use it to get to the wineries. Key road names are listed to give a clear indication of where the wineries/vineyards are located. And if that is not enough information, the maps also show the intensive vine-growing areas. John McDermott has again travelled the country (more than once) to capture the brand-new colour photographs you see throughout the book. Price: NZ$125
