Gibbston Valley Wines
Carved from sheer rock the Gibbston Valley Wine Caves provide a near perfect underground storage environment for wine, as well as an exceptional visitor experience. Gibbston Valley Winery is 20 minutes drive from Queenstown, through some of New Zealand's most beautiful mountain country. Today Gibbston Valley Wines has an international reputation for Pinot Noir, and other grape varieties thriving are Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. Delicate varietal flavours and aromas balanced by fresh crisp acidity forms the essence of each carefully crafted bottle of wine from Gibbston Valley. The winery is billed as one of New Zealand's leading boutique wine producers.
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- Pinot Noir 2008 NZ$39.95
Excellent colour is the trademark of this label, and it is no different in 2008. There is lovely fragrance of violets, plum, anise and cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and dense, with youthful primary fruit balanced by a savoury twist of tannin. Well structured, with the intensity to give 6 years of cellaring.
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- Pinot Noir 2007 NZ$39.95
Made from fruit from the Bendigo and Alexandra vineyards. Great colour gives a hint of the year's small berries and low yields. A bright nose with plenty to comprehend – a tilt of lifted berry fruit coexists with darker plum, as well as leathery, spicy complexities. All that immediate appeal is transported to a silken mouthfeel where genuine concentration eases the wine through the palate. Overall, a richly harmonious package with savoury tannins arriving last to provide a counterpoint. Cellaring: 5-8 years. Gold medal San Francisco Wine Competition,
Blue-gold & Top 100 Sydney Int Wine Competition
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- RESERVE Pinot Noir 2008 $104.95
Blue Gold award, Top 100, Sydney International Wine Competition 2010. Winemaker: Christopher Keys
Tasting notes to come.
GIBBSTON VALLEY
Reserve Chardonnay 2007 $30.95
Bright straw coloured. Nose is filled with stone fruit, white peach and hazelnut. There is lovely fleshiness to the entry, which is gently reined in by the lemony / citrus verve of the fruit and acidity. Great harmony, balance and concentration of flavour. A linear progress to the palate gives a seamless length and poise to the wine. Sleek yet powerful and long.
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- Pinot Gris 2009 $25.95
This wine wine shows an intriguing range of nectarine, pear and spice flavours. The palate is rich and full, very long and pure. The strength of this wine is that you get all that fruit and texture without oak or any coarseness.
Trophy: Best New Zealand Wine, Best New World White Wine - Japan Wine Challenge 2010.
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- RESERVE Pinot Noir 2006 $104.95
During that time of year in which we
spend a great deal of our time tasting the wine from barrel, we will
ruminate over what it is that makes a particular wine qualify for
Gibbston Valley Reserve status. It is more, I assure you, than simply
attributing "Yum", or "scrumptious!" to a wine. The finest wines have a
magic lift, an energy and thrilling power all achieved with an
effortless grace, that leaves you consumed with them (as you consume
them). The hallmark of the 2006 Reserve is the luxurious lifted fruit,
that is curiously dark and brooding as well. A blend of both Gibbston
and Bendigo fruit, capturing the depth and sweetness of each respective
area, this is a complete Pinot that will only get better. Winemaker: Christopher Keys
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- Pinot Blanc 2008 NZ$25.95
The fruit comes from our Bendigo East Vineyard. It was hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, 100% barrel fermented in old French barrels for 10 months…quite a full flavoured wine, offering a nice change from Pinot Gris or Chardonnay.
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- blanc de Pinot Noir 2008 NZ$22.95
Lustrous petal red/pink. Beautiful pure nose, very summery and perfumed. Wild berry fruit and strawberry aromas abound.
Good mouthfeel with finely balanced concentration that gives nice vinosity and a moreish drinkability. Finishes dry, but because the fruit is the major contributor to the flavour the overall effect is carefree and loaded with optimism.
We suggest drinking the Blanc de Pinot Noir as a young wine.
GIBBSTON VALLEY
- Riesling 2006 $24.45
Very varietal nose, with clean, bright aromas of lime and blossom. The palate is weighty and full, but has a delicious minerality which complements the sweet fruit. The finish is long and pure, with a lovely balance maintained throughout.

EXPRESSIONIST SERIES:
GIBBSTON VALLEY Le Fou Riesling 2007 $35.00
Youthful colour with straw coloured rim. The bouquet is bright and fragrant, extraordinarily aromatic. Clear aromas of lime, sherbet and blossom emerge, bright and strongly varietal. The palate has a sweet succulence of flavour, with blossom and limey flavours again prevailing. A lovely citrus cut is provided by the acidity that pierces the palate keeping it fresh and exuberant. A mineral, nervy energy counterpoints the cool climate Riesling fruit. With its tantalising balance between sweetness and zesty tangy flavours combined with obvious youthfulness, Le Fou has definite long term cellaring potential (10 years).
EXTREMELY LIMITED RELEASE - INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED BOTTLES "This is a Riesling drinkers dream and simply a must have wine. I ordered my 6 pack the following morning. One of the greatest NZ Rieslings I have ever tried. A masterpiece, I can't wait to try it again. 100+/109 " Craig Thomson, kiwiwinefanclub.co.nz
EXPRESSIONIST SERIES:
GIBBSTON VALLEY 2007 Expressionist Pinot Noir- Le Maitre $75.00
Ruby coloured, with colour consistent to the edge. Very fragrant bouquet that is strikingly complex and diverse. Dry earth aromas, a plenitude of cinnamon and spice and some typical Gibbston bramble and herb notes abounding. The cherry-like fruit weaves a supporting rather than dominating role. Palate is firm, with a good thread of linear fruit. Lithe youthfulness suggesting a long life. Precise flow through the palate with minimal expansion at this stage of the wine's life. Very concentrated, but not at all heavy. The tannins have an old vine rusticity, giving strength to the mouthfeel. Will cellar 5-10 years.

EXPRESSIONIST SERIES:
GIBBSTON VALLEY 2007 La Dulcinee Pinot Gris $45.00
Faintly straw coloured, flashes of gold. Deeply aromatic nose redolent of sweet straw, honeycomb, earth and summer fields. Rich voluminous palate, expanding in continuous waves of flavour that persist remarkably. Creamy, tending towards oily, with a delicious inclination to colonise all parts of the palate. Hedonistically structured, with some sweetness that tapers into a long, long finish. Lovely depth to palate. Will cellar up to 8 years.
