Black Quail Estate

Aravin Like black diamonds, black pearls and black tulips, the Black Quail is extremely rare.
The Black Quail is the quintessence of refined taste and character, shaped largely by its environment.
Nestled under Mt Difficulty along the Kawarau River in Bannockburn, this family owned vineyard endures an unforgiving terrain and a harsh climate.
It is this struggle that produces a wine with an intensity of flavour and elegance characteristic of Central Otago.
The Keillor family purchased the 20 hectares that make up the Black Quail Estate in 1999 and began planting in 2000. Nestled under slopes of New Zealand's Mt. Difficulty with the rhythmic energy of the Kawarau River lapping it’s shores, the Central Otago terrain is unforgiving and the climate is harsh. These are exactly the characteristics required to produce a wine that would have a flavour with intensity, character and rarity.
The vineyard soon began producing a small amount of premium wines that continues to grow richer and more intense as each year passes.
Rod and Mirani Keillor are truly renaissance people—painting, fashion design, gardening, photography, medicine and gourmet cooking are several of the passions that inspire them and make them unique in the wine world. They believe that is the symbiosis of the land with it’s history, challenges and all it can produce, married with the talents, character and history of the Keillors themselves. There are also olives and truffles growing in the vineyard.
The land the vineyard sits on played an integral part in the Otago Gold Rush in the mid-1800’s.
Wine maker is Matt Dicey.

From its deeply jeweled, luscious colour to its rich, multi-layered tastes, this wine is unpretentious, delivers more than expected of a young vintage and promises excellence as it matures. A stylish wine with a rich aroma of bright cherry, blackcurrant, licorice and a hint of chocolate. It's lingering finish leaves an impression of a wine that is endowed with depth and complexity. Gold medal NZ Winegrowers Bragato Wine Awards 2009.
