Archangel Wines
Archangel is built upon a foundation of hope, love and survival; a đ´ory of destiny. Seventy years
ago in Arkhangel'sk, Siberia, two refugee girls began a courageous journey to freedom, traversing
continents to finally meet. A generation later, their children ensure that the same đ±irit inspires
Archangel Vineyard.
Guided by sustainable practices, the quest is to create balance and a pure expression of terroir;
to craft wine of elegance and individuality; in short, a wine worthy of their achievement.
Archangel Vineyard is located in Queensberry in the Upper Clutha area of Central
Otago, New Zealand. Nestled in the Clutha Valley, the vineyard is framed by the Dunstan
Mountains to the east, the Pisa Range to the west, with the Clutha River running in
between. At latitude 45 degrees south, this is one of the southern-most wine growing
regions in the world; a place of winegrowing on the edge where climatic extremes foster
rich, complex wines.
The natural terraces at Queensberry were formed more than 30,000 years ago when the
area’s glaciers began to melt, washing gravel down onto the land and depositing it in
the valley below. Underneath the loose soil blanketing the Queensberry terrain lies an
interlayer of schist, mineral quartz and gravel.
With its continental climate, Central Otago experiences harsh cold winters, long
hot summers and dry autumns; a unique macroclimate that produces diurnal
variations in temperature.
Archangel Pinot Noir 2008 NZ$37.95
This wine has been crafted from fruit selected for vibrancy and precision and has been
fermented with the inclusion of some whole clusters. The fragrant red and black cherry
fruits open out to a spicy and deliciously warm texture with persistence and length
that define this site. Enjoy this wine with your favourite dishes as it unveils over the next
five years.
