CENTRAL OTAGO SUB REGIONS

CROMWELL BASIN -Bendigo-Tarras

The fast-expanding Bendigo grape-growing region is probably the hottest, most extreme part of the Cromwell Basin, and like Bannockburn was previously rabbit-infested although its earlier human settlers were gold miners working the quartz reefs.

Now large terraces are being planted by some very big operations, and Bendigo is the home to such wineries as Quartz Reef. Gibbston Valley Wines has major plantings there and it is understood even Montana Wines are planting in the area. More vineyards are sprouting in the area nearer to Tarras, and back towards Cromwell and overlooking Lake Dunstan is Northburn.
